Located in the middle of the fields, the Estevelles Slag Heap is an unmissable landmark within the landscape. it is one of the most beautiful remains of the coal-mining era, where all our historical mining heritage is concentrated and represented: the pit is located at the foot of the slag heap in the meadows, the mining buildings are still present at the entrance of the site and the mining town of Avenue de la Fosse 24 links the centre of Estevelles and the slag heap.

Beyond its historical heritage, recognised by its UNESCO classification, it is now of significant ecological interest as its slopes have been colonised by important pioneer species. Its runoff feeds a reed bed popular with many breeding and wintering birds (harriers, common reed bunting, short-eared owls, etc.) and its flowering meadows are home to many species of insects.
